So, this is what the journey of learning to read can be like for children. When your little one comes home from school with their first reading book, they need you to be calm and reassuring. They need you to know what you are doing because , in order for them to want to learn to read, they need to feel safe and secure. If the child starts to sound out their first word "c.....a.....p"... and the parent says "Wow- I didn't know you said it like that," or, "This isn't the way we learnt to read- this is very confusing," the child will probably not want to do it anymore. Knowing how to guide your little one through their reading journey doesn’t just help them become better readers—it also makes them feel safe and supported, which is essential for their overall learning and confidence. So, I encourage you to take the time to learn about how children develop early reading skills. If they don’t want to learn their phonics sounds by sitting at a table and recalling sounds off flashcards, why not turn the flashcards into a game of hide and seek around the house or garden? Watch this video for some ideas. 2. Get Them OUTSIDE Nature is one of the greatest classrooms, offering endless opportunities for exploration and discovery. Instead of teaching the basics of reading to your child at a table indoors, why not take them outside instead? Could you play ‘eye-spy’ on your walk to school to develop their awareness of the sounds that make up words (we call this phonemic awareness)? Could you support them to recognise two-letter sounds (digraphs), such as ‘ch’, by drawing them with sticks in the mud or in the sandpit? Fresh air and a change of scenery can turn any learning activity into a memorable experience. 3. Avoid SCREENS for learning. In today’s digital age, it is easy to rely on screens for educational content. However, at Reading Roots I believe that children should be learning from real-world interactions. By avoiding screens, we encourage children to engage directly with their environment and educator (whether that refers to their teacher, peers or parents). It has been a whirlwind of playtime, cuddles, errands, friends visiting, day tips, airports, beaches, supermarkets, argument mediation, tripping over toys, late nights, early starts and, of course, the odd temper tantrum... but I wouldn't have it any other way! As the first day of school approaches, I know how exciting (and maybe a little nerve-wracking) it can be to prepare your little one for this big step. Starting school is such a special milestone and I want to share a few tips that might help ease the transition for both you and your child. Here are five things to focus on as you get ready for the big day: Practice the Morning Routine Try practicing the morning routine with your child. This could include waking up at the same time that they will be for school and having breakfast, as a family, at 'term time' pace! (My children need to be out of the door by 8am for school so we have got a LOT of practising next week to try and get ourselves back to our 'term' time zone!) Encourage Independence School is a big step towards independence, so now’s the perfect time to encourage your child to do some things on their own, like dressing themselves (ideally with their actual uniform and P.E. clothes), packing their bag, or tidying up toys. Small successes build confidence! Talk About School Positively Chat with your child about what to expect at school. Share stories about what you loved about school and focus on the fun things they’ll experience—like making new friends, playing games, and learning amazing things. Your enthusiasm will help them feel excited too. Familiarise Them with School Items If you have their school supplies already, let them explore! Show them how to use their backpack, lunchbox, and any other items they’ll need. This helps make everything feel more familiar and less intimidating. Set Up a Bedtime Routine A consistent bedtime routine can help ensure your child gets enough sleep, which is so important for those busy school days. A bath, storytime, and some quiet moments before bed can make all the difference.
